Inching Along

Oh, those French knots are so time-consuming--and I fell asleep with needle in hand last night. But, their beauty makes up for it all. It's a love/hate relationship...

there is nothing like the nubbiness in French knots, so gratifying to the haptic sensing

I have been following your blog for a long time and I love your intuitive way of quilting. I'm presently taking an online class with Paivi Eerola called Imagine Monthly--an intuitive painting (mixed media) workshop. It is a lot like the way you work. I have a question about your French knots. I believe your piece is already quilted so do you just go through into the batting or do add the back of the quilt when the top is finished? I'm a big fan of French knots and your work.

Thanks, Mo. Hi, Terry. The back is on and I've got the quilting basically done, although I have been adding on some quilted leaves. I do the French knots from the top, so I'm working on the surface and avoiding the backing (don't use a hoop). I may pick up some batting with the knots, but not much. When I come to the end of a thread, I just work it back and forth several time into the batting. This way it is easier to work, as the quilt has become quite large and bulky (over 6 feet square).
